Competency assessment is an umbrella term for all approaches, forms of interaction, and interventions aimed at identifying competencies, raising awareness of potential, and further developing these competencies. A distinction is made between individual-oriented and requirement-oriented approaches. Individual-oriented approaches and perspectives view career guidance as a contribution to personal development. In requirement-oriented concepts, the focus is on the requirements of, for example, a specific occupational field. Here, the purpose of the process is to examine the extent to which the individual’s competencies align with (or deviate from) those requirements. The methods of competency assessment range from personal interviews and the analysis of resumes to work samples. In addition, procedures for self-assessment and peer assessment are utilized. Furthermore, action-oriented tasks are used to assess competencies. Here, participants must independently organize and complete tasks. Educational professionals trained in this method systematically observe them based on predefined competency criteria.
